Fresh Docs is SDF’s free, monthly, work-in-progress screening series. These screenings give SDF filmmakers an opportunity to show their work fresh from the edit suite and receive constructive feedback on story, structure, and characters from a diverse audience. As a result, not only do our artists make better films, but SDF grows documentary audiences by engaging them meaningfully in the creative process.
The SDF Artists Convening takes place each Spring in Durham, NC. Filmmakers from around the South and beyond are invited for a weekend of inspiring and useful workshops, panels, and pitch sessions, combined with a healthy dose of community building and peer networking.
Held each Winter at Trailblazer Studios in Raleigh, Winterfest celebrates southern food, music, and storytelling. The event was conceived to engage Raleigh’s growing creative companies and their communities.
Each Spring Chef Matt Kelly at Mateo Bar de Tapas prepares an amazing brunch for SDF filmmakers and supporters. After brunch we walk to a nearby downtown theater for the showcase, a screening that highlights several SDF projects in the pipeline.
Held each fall, The Hunt is a one-of-a-kind video scavenger hunt taking place in our Durham neighborhood. Fifty teams fan out and rove the streets of downtown Durham, solving clues and shooting clever and creative short videos to delight our celebrity judges. Winning videos are shown and prizes are distributed that same evening at a lively after party.
