In 1776, 56 men, from land-owning gentry to former indentured servants, defied what was then the greatest military power on the planet. Some considered them brave. Others, traitors. Not a few thought they were out of their minds. But who were they, really, and how are they remembered today?
In conjunction with the publication of Signing Their Lives Away, a book about the signers of the Declaration of Independence, the producers of Revolutionary Road Trip are traveling in the footsteps of these revolutionaries. The result: a documentary feature and a 13-part film series that examines not only the legacy of the 56 signers, but the current state of the American Dream and ideas of independence.
The project takes viewers through the 13 original colonies to visit locations associated with the signers: the pubs, cemeteries, dank dungeons and lavish plantations where they argued, drank, fought, lived, died and were laid to rest. Along the way, the film project introduces the audience to people and events that embody not only the Founding Era's ideas of what America should be, but also what fascinates--and sometimes infuriates--citizens about the United States today.
From the reenactment of the Yorktown Tea Party to the swearing-in of 34 new Americans in the very room where the original Declaration of Independence is displayed, Revolutionary Road Trip is constantly on the hunt for the historic and the hysterical, the insightful and the inspiring.
