Swine Country: A Community Polluted Fighting For Change

Over the last 40 years, the hog and poultry industries of eastern North Carolina have grown tremendously, but at what cost? While the industry makes record profits, all of the animal waste has to go somewhere. And make no mistake, there are millions of tons of waste. Dedicated activists—many of whom are the neighbors, workers, and farmers hit hardest by the industry’s pollution—are getting sicker and poorer. As the meat and livestock industries consolidate, the planet warms, and hurricanes become more frequent, can the environmental justice movement save North Carolina from wasting away?
