Every 11 minutes, another name is added to the organ transplant waiting list; we will help end this wait. On average, 18 people die every day waiting for the gift of life; we will help save lives. In 2008, there were 7,984 deceased organ donors and 6,218 living organ donors totaling in 27,961 transplants. Currently there are over 100,000 people waiting for the gift of life. We will be part of the solution.
The Waiting List is a national multimedia storytelling project that introduces those waiting, those touched by, and those involved in the transplant process. United together by our common passion for stories, we are storytellers, with a common desire to achieve a positive and important social change. Each contributing filmmaker, radio journalist, writer, photographer, etc. will use his or her passion and point of view to reveal the faces and lives behind the statistics of those who were, and will be impacted by organ donation. While other organizations serving this community divide their efforts, time, and resources on multiple tasks to advocate for organ donation, The Waiting List area of concentration and expertise is on telling stories that will transform viewers into donors. We have already garnered national acclaim; one of our stories, “I Choose to Live” won first place in the shorts category at the 2009 Donate Life Hollywood Film Festival.
90% of Americans support organ donation, however only 30% know how to register resulting in 35% of licensed drivers registered as organ donors. With many states now offering an online registration process for organ donation, the solution is within our reach. We will inspire not through the distribution of facts, but rather by humanizing the statistics thereby initiating a vibrant conversation about organ donation in America. From our website, we will provide a direct link for the viewer to register online – ultimately increasing the number of organ donors nationwide. We do not solicit organ donation for one individual. The Waiting List is working with a clear mission; we are driven by one ultimate goal: to increase the number of organ donors overall, benefiting each individual currently on the organ transplant waiting list.
Together we will help end this wait. Welcome to The Waiting List.
