On December 7, 1955, in Greensboro North Carolina, six African American men were arrested and charged with trespassing for playing golf on a publicly owned golf course. The six golfers pursued vindication, and their case went to the North Carolina Supreme Court and subsequently to the United States Supreme Court. Eventually the Gillespie Six won their case, and their courage and determination inspired thousands of African Americans, and laid the foundation for the integration of city owned golf courses, parks, and recreation departments across the country. They did not receive the national recognition they deserved, but their cause was of great magnitude and was justified in the struggle for equality.
