Journey with three North Carolinian parents and the doulas they partner with to achieve a safe and confident birth experience. “Bloom” explores the work doulas are doing to fill gaps in the medical system. The audience follows Delaney Weaver, who looked into her husband’s eyes after her traumatic first birth and swore they would never have another child without an advocate present; Rachel Pryor, who, after desiring an unmedicated water birth, needed a last-minute cesarean section; and Jessica Aldavé, whose first child is scheduled for induction because of numerous complications. Delaney, Rachel, and Jessica are all searching for a way to be heard in a birth system built for the ease of medical professionals, not for birthing parents and infants. At a time when stories about Roe v. Wade, TRAP laws, and state legislatures are in the headlines for making reproductive care more perilous, “Bloom” is about the people who are making healthcare access an easier and positive experience.
