SDF Presents Screening: Roleplay

The Fruit 305 S Dillard St, Durham

Faced with rampant sexual violence on their college campus, a group of college students spend a year creating an immersive play from their real-life experiences. Building characters and scenes based on the sexual politics of their campus, the student actors confront hard truths. The film follows this process with a lyrical lens, blurring the lines between reality and performance, moving between verite of campus life and the confessional vulnerability of the rehearsal room.
Posing urgent questions about the toxic legacies imparted on the next generation, Roleplay explores the roles we play as we grow into who we are: how they hurt us, heal us, and shape who we become.

Screening: How To Sue The Klan

Nickelodeon Theatre 1607 Main Street, Columbia

This documentary tells the story of a racist attack that took place in the home state of the KKK and how that landmark case is still used in court today to fight cases of hate. After Klansmen shot and injured five Black women in 1980 Chattanooga, the women were able to take the KKK to federal civil court using the long-forgotten Enforcement Act of 1871 – also known as the Ku Klux Klan Act. Today the Act is seeing a revival with civil cases in Charlottesville and Washington DC where lawyers hope to address resurgent hate groups. This film seeks to commemorate a piece of civil rights history still resonating in today’s civil courts.
