THE ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT WILLIAM R. TOLBERT

Using the backdrop of the April 22nd memorial service in Liberia, we revisit the events that led to the 1980 coup and assassination of President William R. Tolbert. We interview several surviving family members, tracing their roots to South Carolina, and follow President Tolbert’s rise to become the 19th president of Liberia. We examine the circumstances leading to his assassination and the fallout that led to the Liberian Civil War.
