Southern Documentary Fund's New Board Members
Durham, N.C. – February 26, 2025 – Southern Documentary Fund (SDF) is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Bobby Donaldson and Steven Raets as its two newest Board members. Together, their expertise in historical research, storytelling, and media production will further Southern Documentary Fund’s mission to support documentary makers and amplify stories that shape the American South.
Dr. Bobby Donaldson is an Associate Professor of History and the Director of the Center for Civil Rights History and Research at the University of Southern Carolina-Columbia. An award-winning educator, Dr. Donaldson has received the Helen Khon Henning Prize and the Micheal J. Mungo Undergraduate Teaching Award. Dr. Donaldson has curated and consulted for museum exhibitions, led historic preservation projects, and spearheaded Columbia SC 63: Story Matters, documenting the civil rights movements in Columbia, SC. Dr. Donaldson’s extensive research on African American intellectual thought, education and activism, along with his commitment to public history, aligns with SDF’s dedication to preserve and uplift underrepresented narratives.
Steven Raets, a Latin Grammy-nominated Director and media innovator, is the founder of Sonark Media, a cutting-edge creative space located in Hillsborough, NC. With over two decades of experience in music production, Raets has utilized his skills across genres, earning nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song at the 25th Latin Grammy Awards. Raets’ work spans multiple genres, including rock, pop, alternative, and film scores. His recent projects include Pie and Pie TV, which have redefined how creators control their content and careers, and Sonark Sessions:Live from the Barn, a ten-part music series on PBS. Steven Raets’ expertise and dedication to enhancing each artist’s unique vision make him a great addition to SDF’s Board.

Their contributions will play a vital role in shaping SDF’s future and furthering its impact on not only the documentary landscape but also in the support and assistance provided to Southern makers.
