Humanizing, reverent, and confrontational, Titus Brooks Heagins’ photographs document people who, usually through some intersection of poverty, race, or gender/sexual identity, exist as societal outsiders. Titus’ photos can be found in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, Duke University’s Nasher Museum, and the North Carolina Museum of Art. Yet today, he still seeks to be recognized in broader circles and, at 72, struggles to get his artwork into public spaces. Despite these career obstacles, Titus remains steadfast and obsessed about his photographic practice. As his wife Maureen attests, “he is never without his camera.” “Always Looking” will highlight Titus’ dedication to shining his lens on the untold stories of outsiders with compassion and grace.
