DELIVERING JUSTICE

Tanya Smith-Johnson smiles as she stands over the shoulder of her client during a postpartum visit in a mobile midwifery van in Hawaii. Her client, a Black mother with tatoos, sits on an exam table and smiles at her baby, a newborn with curly tufts of black hair. Tanya has a stethoscope around her neck and wears a black T-shirt emblazoned with the slogan "THE FUTURE IS ACCESSIBLE MIDWIFERY CARE."

Living on the Edge: The Outer Banks Odyssey

This photograph depicts Atlantic Ocean overwash, flooding and destruction of Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island following Hurricane Dorian in 2019 ― a storm that devastated portions of Ocracoke, Hatteras and Portsmouth islands in less than an hour.

THE RIVER

An older shrimper with grey hair stands on the bow of his boat in the Mississippi River. Behind him is a big, stormy sky.
