The Southern Documentary Fund seeks a Marketing & Communications Manager
Southern Documentary Fund (SDF) champions Southern documentary makers and stories. Inspired by our belief in the power of media to educate and change lives, we provide documentarians with diverse resources, including grants, fiscal sponsorship, community dialogue, professional education and mentorship–all to promote Southern stories and lower barriers for documentary makers and underrepresented voices.
About the Role: As the Marketing and Communications Manager, you will contribute by driving brand awareness as well as develop, oversee, and deliver all aspects of strategic marketing and communications for Southern Documentary Fund (SDF). Working across platforms, including SDF’s website, social media accounts, email, and various print and digital materials, you will promote the work of SDF and its sponsored makers to targeted audiences, including artists, industry experts, donors, and the general public. You will focus on growing audiences, increasing awareness, and helping generate revenue. Working alongside a small and dedicated staff that oversee SDF’s programs and operations, the Marketing and Communications Manager is the primary interface with external parties on communication matters, including general inquiries, events, promotional partnerships, project pages, and public relations. This position reports to the Executive Director. This is a fully Remote role, with occasional travel to Durham, North Carolina (HQ).
Responsibilities:
- Create and execute marketing and communications strategies for the organization, maintaining brand identity for all programs, events, and outreach
- Develop and produce assets and content to engage and educate various audiences across multiple channels, including newsletters, blogs, graphics, website, social media
- Oversee the development and maintenance of the organization’s website including ease of navigation, clarity of information and ensure that all content is current and relevant
- Develop, write, and edit marketing and communications materials, including press releases, blog posts, social media content
- Assist with donor communications and crafting language for grants and reports
- Develop and execute social media activities across multiple channels
- Design and implement a dynamic social media content calendar and engagement strategy
- Track marketing efforts and analytics
- Maintain digital media archives including photos and videos
- Produce all email campaigns and manage review, testing, and sending
- Gather information and send out monthly newsletters to general email lists and SDF supported documentary makers
- Organize events, performing outreach and marketing, creating social sharing toolkits and managing ‘day of ‘ social media and communications
- Collect program data and craft program feedback/evaluations, track and analyze data, share issues and trends with staff
- Track attendance and demographics for all SDF events and programs
- Create and manage registration for SDF events and programs
- Analyze collected data to assess success and inform future strategies
- Identify and create databases for media outlets, organizations, festivals, schools, and documentary collectives who align with SDF’s mission
- Stay up-to-date and socially engaged with industry, partner organizations and sponsored makers
- Create and update project and resource pages for sponsored makers
- Develop, institute and oversee policies to enhance the efficiency of communications and to further develop the building and maintaining of a positive and effective brand
- Create and maintain internal communication protocols and initiatives
- Provide marketing and communications support for special projects and initiatives
- Provide support for grant research and applications, as needed
Qualifications:
- Five (5) years of marketing/communications experience, preferably in an arts/film and/or nonprofit setting
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong project planning, critical thinking and problem solving; self-directed with an entrepreneurial approach
- Skilled in visual design; experience with design software a plus
- Adept at using social media, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, X, as well as YouTube and other media
- Strong networking and relationship management skills
- Proficient with technology, including cloud-based apps and software, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite/Docs and Spreadsheets; Communications Software desired – Mailchimp, Zoom, Asana, Slack
- Highly motivated self-starter, who can work independently and with a team
Salary: $60,000- $65,000/year
