Thank You, Sister is the story of a modern-day Saint, Sister Gertrude Morgan, whose influence reached far beyond her one-room New Orleans Ninth Ward Mission affecting and empowering the artistic lives of creators and musicians for a generation and beyond.
The feature-length documentary will tell the story of artist, evangelist, poet, and musician Sister Gertrude Morgan through the interweaving of historical recordings with interviews of those who knew her, contemporary artists who are influenced by her work, collectors of her art, and followers of her message. These will be wrapped around the real-time creation of an artwork by 16-year-old New Orleanian, Shantane Lemay, who is an emerging artist and admirer of Sister Gertrude. Tae, as she is called, shares a similarly powerful vision and inspiration as Sister, and will speak of her connection to the divine as it influences her art. The film will also employ immersive transitions that take us into the realm of magical realism as we travel into the works of both Sister Gertrude and Tae through the use of VFX, poetry, and music.
The film will unpack the mystery of Sister Gertrude’s distinctive approach and influence in the world of art. It will explore the power of spirituality through art and how it spoke to Sister Gertrude and her followers so profoundly. Sister Gertrude Morgan’s voice will be amplified and her story told for the first time through an intersectional investigation. The voices of BIPOC and women who have been historically overshadowed will lead the conversation. The film will make Sister Gertrude and her work discoverable to a new generation.
